Rocky Mountain Victorian home meets Mediterranean villa style at this downtown Durango Colorado vacation rental home located in one of Durango’s oldest neighborhoods with two options for easy walking access to the Animas River Trail as well as Historic Main Avenue and a garden path to patio seating area near the river’s edge

Originally constructed in 1898, and remodeled extensively in 2007, the River House Villa is a stylish mix of architecture and design, creating a luxurious, yet comfortable respite to return to after the day’s activities in the beautiful Durango area.

Step through the gated rock arch into a private home in the midst of downtown Durango to the comfort of a living room sized outdoor covered seating area with sofas, a cafe table, and gas grill with sunken ‘kiva’ rock fire pit in the nearby garden area.  A sauna room is located immediately adjacent to the fire pit on the back side of the garage.

Just past the lawn, garden and outdoor living area, is the covered porch breezeway entrance to the sunlight-filled foyer/sunroom with arched, cathedral ceiling and large windows that take in views of the garden and lawn.

Beyond the foyer on the ground level is a formal dining room, a living room, the kitchen and a den, all with hardwood floors.  The formal dining room includes a round dining table, comfortably seating six or more, the living room includes a gas fireplace with marble surround.  Both rooms feature Venetian plaster walls which contribute to the eclectic-but-tasteful decor.

The gourmet kitchen includes professional-grade cooking appliances and is fully stocked with utensils, cookware and dinner ware.  Beyond the kitchen, is the den / media room, with large TV, sofa and lounge-y furniture and gas fireplace.  The den also serves as a bonus sleeping room with a queen size sleeper sofa and additional single bed / chair conversion.  The kitchen and den are a great duo of rooms to make indoor gatherings convenient and comfortable for the whole group.  There is a 3/4 bath with shower off the den on this main level.

Upstairs, the master suite at the end of the hall boasts a comfortable king size bed and a very stylish master bath with large shower luxurious tub and gas heating stove with exposed brick accent wall to mix modern fixtures with Victorian period architecture. 

The second bedroom on the upper level includes queen size bed and a deco styled bath is located immediately across the hall from this bedroom.

A basement-level utility room includes full-sized washer and dryer, and is large enough for bike, ski and other outdoor gear storage.

This home is a rare, in-town, riverfront home, with access to the Animas River via an old stone garden path and steps leading down to a sitting area near the river’s edge.  For the slightly adventurous traveler, access to the water is via a rope ladder where fishing small-boat (canoe, raft, inner-tube) is possible.  

Fassbinder Park and greenbelt, immediately across the street, is replete with old-growth trees, picnic tables and playground for the kids.

The two car garage, transformed from the original Victorian carriage house, allows for private, secured parking for two passenger cars, and street parking is available for larger vehicles.

In town, the paved Animas River Trail, accessed by a short walk from this home,  runs the entire length of town along the river, making for easy commuting to parks, restaurants, a day spa and other downtown destinations, as well providing an excellent fitness and scenery corridor.  Guests can walk to the Animas River Trail with a choice of two separate paths; one is just a few doors away on the Main Avenue bridge over the river, and the other is via a suspension footbridge about a block away.  Directions to both will be supplied in the home for guest navigation.

The home is located right in town, just seconds from Main Avenue, and the famous San Juan Scenic Skyway, including a section known as the Million Dollar Highway, which is an incredibly picturesque driving loop that connects Durango, Mancos, Mesa Verde National Park, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Purgatory Resort, as well as many fantastic trails for hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing and other Rocky Mountain adventures.
